The espresso-versus-filter question is really a question about time, texture, and how much of the coffee’s character you want at once.
Espresso: concentration
Nine bars of pressure through a fine bed of coffee in under thirty seconds. The result is dense, syrupy and intensely aromatic — and unforgiving. A grind adjustment of a few microns is the difference between sweet and sour.
Pour over: clarity
Gravity, a paper filter, and three minutes. Filtration removes the oils that give espresso its body, and what is left is separation: you taste the individual notes of the origin rather than their sum.
Choosing
If you want intensity, milk drinks, and a two-minute morning, buy an espresso setup and expect a learning curve. If you want to taste where a coffee came from and enjoy the three minutes it takes, a dripper and a kettle will serve you for a lifetime at a fraction of the cost.
